Ride into autumn at Brimstone

Category:

There are places where fall is something you see through the windshield. At Brimstone Recreation, it is something you ride straight into.

By October, the mountains surrounding Huntsville have begun their annual transformation. Summer’s deep greens give way to red, orange and gold, cooler air settles into the hollows, and the ridgelines of the Cumberland Mountains become some of the best places in Tennessee to experience autumn.

And there may be no better way to see it than from the seat of an ATV or side-by-side.

Brimstone Recreation offers more than 300 miles of OHV trails and roads spread across more than 19,000 acres of rugged Appalachian terrain near Huntsville. The trail system ranges from easy routes suitable for beginners and families to moderate and difficult trails featuring steep climbs, mud, ruts and other challenges for experienced riders.

But fall changes the experience.

A ride that is beautiful in July becomes spectacular when October arrives. Trails climb from shaded creek bottoms toward high ridges, where breaks in the timber reveal mountains rolling toward the horizon beneath a patchwork of autumn color. Fallen leaves crunch beneath the tires, the air is cooler, and a stop at an overlook becomes a reason to shut off the engine and stay awhile.

Fall also brings some practical advantages. Gone are the hottest days of summer, when the combination of heat, humidity and dust can make a long day on the trail exhausting. A crisp October morning calls for a jacket, but by afternoon the temperature can be just right for riding.

Brimstone’s trail system makes it possible to tailor a day to nearly any experience level. Easy trails generally follow old logging or gravel roads, while moderate trails introduce obstacles such as washouts, steep climbs and deep mud. Difficult trails are intended for experienced riders looking for a greater challenge.

The experience does not necessarily have to end when the engines shut down. Brimstone offers cabins and camping, making a fall riding trip an easy weekend getaway rather than simply a day on the mountain.

Riders should plan ahead. A valid land-use permit is required for everyone accessing the riding trails, including passengers, and riders are required to remain on marked trails. Brimstone also recommends obtaining a trail map, checking weather and trail conditions, carrying emergency supplies and riding with others.

Perhaps the best advice, though, is not to hurry.

Fall in the Cumberland Mountains never lasts long enough. The brilliant colors that seem permanent in mid-October can disappear surprisingly quickly after a windy afternoon or a hard rain.

So stop at the overlooks. Take the pictures. Pack a lunch. Give yourself an entire day to explore.

At Brimstone, the destination is only part of the attraction. In autumn, the ride itself — through cool mountain air and beneath a canopy painted red and gold — is the reason to go.
