Big South Fork Country is the final destination for several excursion trains as part of Norfolk-Southern Railroad’s 21st Century Steam program in 2014. The trains will come from Chattanooga, Tenn., and Lexington, Ky., carrying hundreds of passengers. At Oneida City Park — Oneida’s widely-recognized trail-side park — passengers will disembark, shop with arts-and-crafts vendors and enjoy good food while the train is turned and prepared for its return trip from the Cumberlands back to its original starting point.
The first date for the 2014 BSF Vintage Train Fest will be Sunday, March 30. The train will come from Chattanooga, Tenn. (Purchase tickets.) Riders will travel a 282-mile round trip along the N-S main line, which includes the famous “Rathole” division — the 300 ft. tall span across New River and numerous tunnels. Train tickets start at $80.
At Oneida City Park, the Scott County Chamber of Commerce will host a festival that will include a vintage car cruise-in, live entertainment (Great Day In The Morning bluegrass band and the Highlander Bluegrass Band) and vendors that include arts and crafts and food.
Festival times at Oneida City Park are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The train is scheduled to arrive between 12 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. Passengers will be at the park for approximately two hours.
MAY 31-JUNE 1
The second date for the 2014 BSF Vintage Train Fest will be Saturday, May 31, and Sunday, June 1. The train will be coming from Lexington, Ky., each day. (Tickets are not yet on sale.) Further details will be announced at a later date.
Festival details for Oneida City Park are still being finalized, but festival times will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The train will likely arrive between 12 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. Passengers will be at the park approximately two hours. As with the earlier festival, the Chamber of Commerce will host, with a vintage car cruise-in on Saturday and a motorcycle ride-in on Sunday, and live entertainment both days, along with vendors that include arts and crafts and food.
